thanks to the fine folks at netflix, i recently got my hands on and watched TRON LEGACY. all the purist nerds wanted this one to fail, but you know what, it's a pretty darn good little movie, not a masterpiece, but pretty pretty, y'know? did i enjoy it? thoroughly. was i jealous of it? yes. let me explain...

ever since around the age of seven, the hack writer in me has taken over my brain. see, when i watch a piece of fine filmmaking like a STAR WARS or something, the voices in my head come out and demand to know why I didn't write STAR WARS. i tell myself that i have the creativity to, but do i have the drive? don't get me wrong, it's not that i'm jealous of others' brilliant work, it's just that i always think to myself whenever i walk out after an epic movie that I have the tools to write such a screenplay. i could do it, i really believe i could craft such a story and fill it with memorable characters and memorable lines if only my diseased thoughts didn't get in the way and my shut-in instincts didn't hold me down once again. thus, i've never really been able to enjoy a classic film 100% free of stress. on the one hand, i do enjoy the film like the rest of the humans in the theater, it's pleasurable. but on the other hand, in my secret world, i'm cursing at myself---silently, thank god---cursing at myself, berating myself for not having come up with that idea before the other writer did. man, i'm fucked, but y'know what? even if all i do is watch great creations and never create a masterpiece myself, that's still a good life, huh? at least i sure hope that reasoning quiets down the voices, huh? ya feel me?

olivia wilde...now there's a distraction from the mind chaos. don't lie, you were thinking it, too, while you watched, what did the jeff bridges character do for all those years living in that computerized house with just olivia in her skintight uniform there as a companion? yeah, they did that, it's a disney film i know, but they did THAT.

as you know, i'm into all music that's techno, industrial, and computery, so i adore Daft Punk's work of the TRON LEGACY soundtrack here. what are your favorite movie soundtracks?

"all the purist nerds wanted this one to fail" - You're making me feel like less of a nerd here!! :P And well, I think the better way of putting it is nerds thinking most likely it was gonna fail. I certainly didn't WANT it to fail, but I didn't have high expectations of the movie going into the theatre. Olivia Wilde?? Leather?? Oh yesssss, please!! But coming out, I was pleasantly surprised.

As far as soundtracks go, I'm all over the place. Between Practical Magic (Lisahall, Marvin Gaye, Harry Nilsson), Matrix Reloaded (Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Dave Matthews Band remixed), and I did like the Legacy soundtrack as well. Daft Punk's Alive album is the ONLY album I can listen to from start to finish.

As usual, I'm behind in movie watching so this is one I've not seen. As a writer myself, I tend to feel inspired by a good movie, not competitive, and enjoy analysing the elements I felt made it successful. Sometimes I possess those tools if the film is in 'my' genre, other times I don't and can learn.

I've always tended to go for orchestral soundtracks, such as those composed by John Williams. I was shocked recently to see myself pull a 180 and be thrilled by a rock/pop soundtrack.

Write a screenplay and I'll watch your movie for sure!

As for a movie soundtrack, I really like Blade Runner's.

And I gotta watch Tron eventually.. :P

Everyone in the family has seen Tron but me. And I'm okay with it. I know it'll happen eventually. As for favorite sound tracks - geesh, I don't even know where to start. So many choices.

It's Blade Runner for me too, along with Gimme Shelter, Inception and GoodFellas. What can I say? I've always wanted to be a gangster. Or a rock star. Or a shady detective in a futuristic noir.

Failing that, I want to be that femme fatale Olivia Wilde in that leather catsuit stroking your chest (or playing hopscotch on your funky squares)... :*

She is beautiful, Olivia, but I like her look in Tron more than her real look. That black hair and those eyes! And her body... I mentioned Tron today on my blog too. I think I saw it three times. It confused me as all good sci fi type movies do

first, yeah, I liked it.
The two guys that went with me, roomie and my brother, didn't like it.
But for me? I'm over the glasses/3-D crap.
meanwhile...
when I watched it (and the danged credits, too) I wondered if this was the same guy that did 1492.
Haven't looked yet, but, what's it matter if I knowm, right?
Now last, but hardly least...
Star Trek First Contact...WOW!
Great idea!
and I went home and mentally wrote how they get caught into the time event they created and accidentally sli[p in about five hundred years into their OWN future, and when they beam down to Earth...
It's friendly and all...
But the people of that time don't want the crew to return for fear of breaking that prime directive...
Non interferrence, eh?
And the adventure was going to be them banding together and escaping back to the past where they belonged.
Details Schmeebales.
I just write them as fast as a bunny and never make a penny because I don't write them in "real" words....
But it is fun.

trixie: ha, yeah, that's the sign of a good sci-fi script: glorious, wonderful confusion :)
